Structure activity relationhip in the cytoprotective effect of limonene and derivatives

In the search of new compounds acting as cytoprotective agentswe analyzed a series of different limonene derivatives performing an exhaustivestudy of their electronic and conformational behaviour. An importantfinding from the biological point of view is the cytoprotective activity found fartwo limonene derivatives. The theoretical study of the above compounds1 suggests that the active compounds would have a chemical behavior similar\ to that of the active groups of helenalin. Our reuslts indicate that a nonsterically hindered structure of the -C=C-C=O type would be a necessarystructural requisite far the gastric cytoprotective activity.
