Resumen:
The purpose of the article is to clarify the various meanings and contents of the hypethesis of embourgeoisement, critically explore the limitations of the approach usually taken when presenting and discussing the hypothesis, and to offer some alternative interpretations. The hypothesis is not an isolated interpretation but part of wider conceptions according to which capitalist industrial societies are becoming either middle-class, service-class or middle-mass societies rather than class societies. The discussion centers on the working class.
