This article focuses on societal and cultural transformations that take place in the contexto of the process of regional integration. It asks how these policies affects societal actors and mvements as the policies of economic integration are advanced by governments and powerful economic actors. Rather than assuming a linear process, the article explores how the MERCOSUR process is becoming a framework for societal activities, implying a multiplication of international exclanges and contacts in border areas and in interactions among social movements. Often, new conflicts emerge, and the results may lead to strengthening rather than weakening nationalistic principles and ideologies.
