Resumen:
Chromosome numbers and karyotypes of some species of Vernonia (Asteraceae). Meiotic or mitotic chromosome numbers were determined in 12 species of Vernonia. The numbers include first counts for five species: V. incana (2n=34), V. brevifolia (2n=32 + 1-3B), V. sellowii (2n=62), V. squarrosa (2n=64) and V. oxyodonta (2n=128). The karyotype of five species are also analyzed, three of these are described for the first time: V. nitidula 2n=34= 22m + 12sm, V. brevifolia 2n=32= 22m + 10sm and V. mollissima 2n=64= 44m + 20sm. The significance of the results is discussed in relation to the taxonomic position of these species.
