Resumen:
Vernonia gertii Dematteis sp. nov. is described and illustrated from Serra da Bodoquena in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul. In addition, a new combination for the endemic genus Mattfeldanthus H. Rob. & R. M. King is also proposed. The new species is characterized by the presence of large lanceolate leaf blades, attenuate at the base, heads pedicellate and aristate phyllaries, which clearly separate it from other South American members of Vernonieae. V. gertii presents a superficial resemblance to V. eriolepis Gardn. which also shows aristate phyllaries and is distributed in Mato Grosso do Sul. However, V. eriolepis have sessile heads, ferruginous pubescence and ovate-lanceolate leaves, shortly attenuate at the base.
