Resumen:
With the aim of enhancing the seismic reliability of structures, external energy dissipation systems may be advantageously used. In this paper, the effectiveness of a novel Multi-Friction Damper (MFD) in terms of structural reliability is assessed through experimental tests on a single degree of freedom frame model and by nonlinear numerical analyses on a multi-storey real building under seismic excitation. A mathematical formulation based on the Wen?s model which it has been used to describe the nonlinear behaviour of the MFD in the simulation study is also presented. To obtain robust results in the reliability analysis of experimental model, an ensemble including acceleration records with markedly different characteristics is used. The full reliability analysis on a typical real building frame provided with the proposed MFD, showed that a reduction of the limit state probability in the order of 74% may be expected.
