In previous papers, the authors show that for purposes of seismic retrofitting of steel and concrete frame structures, external dampers may be advantageously used. In this contribution, the influence of friction and metallic external dampers on the dynamic response of structures subjected to wind and man-induced excitation is examined. As practical examples, first the effect of dampers on the dynamic properties of an 82m high transmission line steel tower that failed during a typhoon in Japan in 1991 is studied. Other practical example is given in connection with footbridge structures. In this case, a light steel structure, which constitutes an economical solution to the design problem, became feasible only through the installation of dampers. In the assessment of the effect of passive dampers, the properties of friction and metallic dampers developed and tested at the Laboratory of Structural Dynamics and Reliability of the UFRGS, Brazil, were used.
