Resumen:
Nowadays, enzymatic catalysis is one of the most promising technologies for the oxidation of xenobiotics. Peroxidases are among the most used enzymes. Peroxidases catalyze the oxidation of organic compounds using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) or organic peroxides as an oxidizing agent. The immobilization of enzymes is crucial for the development of economically viable bioprocesses. The objective of the present work was to develop a biocatalyst based on peroxidases immobilized on diatomites (DASE) to be applied in the oxidation of the azo Orange II (OII) dye. From the obtained results in batch and column assays, it was demonstrated that DASE can eliminate moderate amounts of OII by adsorption. The presence of H2O2 increased the OII removal rate, demonstrating that the peroxidases immobilized on diatomites (DASE) were able to catalyze the oxidation of the dye. However, a decrease in DASE activity due to the loss of the enzyme from the solid phase was observed. Thus, more research is needed to increase the load of the enzyme in the diatomites and improve the stability of the immobilized enzyme.
