Resumen:
The oxidation of phenol solutions through the Fenton reaction using homogeneous Cu (II) and a novel heterogeneous Cu (II) –chitosan/alumina catalyst was studied in a laboratory batch reactor at 323K. Total phenol and 80% and total organic carbon (TOC) conversions were achieved using 200 mg/l of Cu(II) in homogeneous reaction or employing  a significantly smaller amount of Cu(II) (116 mg/l) with the Cu (II) –chitosan/alumina heterogeneous catalyst. The toxicity of the model wastewater and its oxidation products to activated sludge was estimated by activated sludge respirometry.  Results suggest that toxicity of treated samples was mainly due to the presence of Cu (II); in addition, the presence of phenol oxidation by-products obtained in both catalytic systems had a negligible effect on the respiration rate of activated sludge.
