Resumen:
In this article we analyze, how authenticity is defined and contested by different social actors which participate in heritage and tourism valorisation processes of a city. Specially, how it is contested, in discursive and material terms, over time. Hence, we stand that ideas, or discourses, about authenticity could be used by different sectors of a community, either, as a mechanism to legitimize/discredit heritage/tourism projects; or, as a way to control activation of ?heritage attractions?. We propose San Antonio de Areco city as our case of study, located in Buenos Aires province-Argentina. These themes will be take into account, based on the examination of the tension that emerge between identity representations and tourist commodity, when significant elements associated to a particular type of tradition and gaucho figure are commercialized.
