Nasally administered heat-killed Lactobacillus rhamnosus strains differentially modulate respiratory antiviral immune responses

Resumen:
The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the nasal administration of non-viable Lactobacillus rhamnosus CRL1505 (Lr05) and L. rhamnosus CRL1506 (Lr06) were able to improve respiratory antiviral defenses and beneficially modulate the immune response triggered by the viral pathogen-associated molecular pattern poly(I:C). Heat-killed Lr05 or Lr06 were nasally administered to different groups of 3-week-old BALB/c mice for 2 consecutive days (108 cells/mouse/d). Then, controls and lactobacilli-treated mice received three doses of poly(I:C) (250 ug) with 24 hs rest period between each administration. Respiratory immune response and lung tissue damage were studied at several time points after the last poly(I:C) challenge. Poly(I:C) challenge triggered an inflammatory damage of lung tissue.
