Resumen:
The human eye, and in particular the corneal epithelium, is exposed to different kinds ofaggression that can damage it. Nowadays, the current procedures used to solve problems related to eyeburns or damages have a series of disadvantages such as the requirement of surgical procedures, higheconomic costs, and discomfort in the patient?s eyes. Despite it is known that proteins and severalgrowth factors help to reparation mechanisms [1], there is a great need for the development ofcontrolled release systems based on biocompatible and biodegradable materials for thesebiomolecules. In this work, we propose a novel system based on the incorporation of gel nanoparticles insidehydrogel matrixes for the encapsulation and release of proteins in ophthalmic applications. Thesystems involve different kinds of nanogels (biodegradable or not biodegradable). A study of thediameter (ca. 200 nm), shape (spherical), surface charge (negative), and other importantphysicochemical properties was made in order to compare the different synthesized nanogels.Furthermore, the encapsulation of a model protein (BSA-FITC) was made, achieving different loadingcapacities and efficiencies in each case. Moreover, the generation of hydrogels was made by physicalcrosslinking. At this moment, the release of the protein is under evaluation trying to mimic theconditions that really occur in the human eye.
