Resumen:
Photovoltaic (PV) systems are expected to displace CO2 emissions of electricity generated by power plants in the electric system; must be a net energy producer from a life-cycle perspective, and must be cost competitive with centralized power plants if they are to emerge as a prominent energy technology. Enormous progresses have been achieved in all these aspects, which explains the fast growth of PV industry in the last few years. Multifunctionality in building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) systems is a good strategy for increasing the attractiveness of renewable energy sources. This work highlights results of a single tracking BIPV system installed in a university campus in Mendoza, Argentina from the environemtnal viewpoint. One of the system?s design premises was to focus on highly-visible, building-integrated solutions, thus enhancing the impact of the PV technology on the local community. This is fully accomplished by installing the grid-connected system as eaves in the main classrooms building of the campus. The BIPV system, which is in plain sight from the building's playground, plays a role both as a micro - power generation plant and as a building element which adds value to the architecture. The environmental implications of this design are explored using a Life cycle perspective.
