Resumen:
Currently, there is a growth in world demand for citrus products and by-products, whose requirements include environmental quality regulations. In this sense, the Environmental Product Footprint obtained from the methodology of life cycle assessment (LCA) and its combination with optimization techniques provides a tool to identify improvement options in the process and set quality standards. However, there are few studies that apply the combination of both methodologies. The goal of this study to find coincidences, differences and gaps in scientific articles about the LCA application in optimizing the production of citrus and its derivatives. Therefore, a review and selection of the scientific material was carried out according to publications that used the LCA methodology, optimization techniques and the combination of both methodologies. The studies were evaluated according to the guidelines of ISO 14040 and 14044, the considered products and the objective function in the case of optimization studies. In the results, we could observe a lack of these scientific contributions for the citrus industry of Argentina, some articles did not follow any guidelines about the rules of the product requirements (ISO 14025), and the methodological variations, generate different results that do not allow for comparisons between studies that apply the LCA, so it is necessary to follow a certain methodological line in the future, that allows the comparison and increase the research about the application of the LCA tool combined with optimization techniques applied to citrus agroindustry in Argentina
