Resumen:
The stored information can re-enter a labile state after the presentation of a memory cue (reminder) followed by a period of re-stabilization knownas reconsolidation1. During this process the memory trace can be modify, impaired, strengthened or changed in content. Whether the process ofreconsolidation is conserved in elderly is still under debate. Normal aging is associated with deficits in memory processes and it has beensuggested that reconsolidation is also affected by aging2. Here, we studied whether a declarative memory could be strengthened in older adultsthrough the reconsolidation process35 older adults between 62-86 years old, and 23 youngadults between 16-17 years old, without previous neurological orpsychiatric disorders. All the older participants were tested with aneuropsychological screening, including ACE-R, MMSE and IFS Test toexaminate frontal functions. All obtained results over the establishedcut-off points for a probable dementia diagnosis or Mild CognitiveImpairment. We also included the Stanford Sleepiness Scale. Allparticipants accepted their participation signing an informed consentContrary to previous results 2 repetitive and single reactivations trigger memory strengthening in older adults. Inyoung adults, only repeated reactivations showed improvement. These results highlight the implication of thereconsolidation process for the development of tools and treatments to improve episodic memories, that arecritically impaired in elderly.
