Resumen:
Abstract.Aspergillus flavus may produce aflatoxins (AFs) in maize. A promising strategy to reduce AFs accumulation is the biological control. In order to select potential biocontrol agents and to develop bioformulates to control the aflatoxin contamination, A. flavus strains were isolated from maize and soil samples. The isolates were identified following morphological and molecular criteria, and they were characterized according to aflatoxins and cyclopiazonic acid production, as well as to sclerotia morphotype. In the present study A. flavus strains were selected for their mating type determination and their genetic diversity characterization. All evaluated isolates had MAT 1-1 idiomorph and among them, 2 vegetative compatibility groups were detected. Also, the competitive ability of non-toxigenic isolates was evaluated in co-inoculations of maize kernels with an aflatoxigenic strain. All evaluated A. flavus strains neither aflatoxin nor CPA producers, L morphotype, and MAT 1-1 idiomorph were able to reduce AFB1 content in maize kernels and were selected as potential biocontrol agents.
