Aerodynamic coefficient identification using moving horizon estimation algorithm

The aim of this project is the identification of the aerodynamic coefficients in order to generate a complete aerodynamic description for a projectile flight dynamics. An efficient algorithm was developed to perform the estimation of the aerodynamic coefficients. Moreover, the complete trajectory is computed with an advanced coupled Computing Fluid Dynamics (CFD)/Rigid Body Dynamics (RBD) for predicting the free flight behavior of the projectile. At the first stage, unsteady time accurate CFD simulations are performed and the coefficients obtained supply the RBD model. Then, the innovative parameter estimator algorithm fits the calculated coefficients. Finally, the RBD with six degree of freedom (6DOF) model is fed with the estimated aerodynamic coefficients and the trajectory of the free flight is computed. Numerical Simulation of the flight dynamics of a projectile have been perform in a HPC Cluster.
