Resumen:
Published in GOTARC series D. No. 67. Stenborg, Per & Cornell, Per (Red) 2007. Report from the project Social innovation in Indian culture by the time of European contact. Pichao Project Reports No 4. Vetenskaplig redovisning avseende bidrag mottagna från Birgit och Gad Rausings Stiftelse för Humanistisk Forskning.Earlier investigations within the site-area of Pichao have enabled the differentiation between a settlement (STucTav 5) dating from theprehispanic period (essentially the Regional Development Period, c. A.D. 900?1480) andanother, smaller, settlement (STucTav 7), dating from the period of contact between European and Native populations in this region (i.e. the Spanish Native Period, A.D. 1536-1660). The region was in general characterised by a strong and successful resistance against the European conquest during the 16th and 17th centuries. Although the first direct contact between Spaniards and Natives occurred in the mid 1530s (i.e. the expedition of Diego Almagro), it was not until the second half of the 17th century that Spanish authority could be established here.
