This document describes the development of the Extensible Message Gateway, an infrastructure component providing messaging services to software applications. The Gateway implements core services for exchanging messages and, to some extent, extended functionality required by communicating applications. For complementing the services offered by the Gateway, two more software components are provided: (i) a web application for managing a central repository of resources used by the Gateway, and (ii) a client application for assisting users in creating and configuring the Gateway structures. The document presents the scope of the Software Infrastructure for e-Government Project and introduces the Extensible Messaging Gateway. Next, it specifies in detail the software requirements, followed by conceptual, use case, design and implementation models, as well as possible deployment scenarios. A glossary of terms and some implementation artifacts, such as XML Schemas, configuration files, Application Programming Interfaces and the main Java classes are included in the appendices.
