This document describes the findings of the research carried out to determine the state-of-practice of Electronic Governance for Sustainable Development (EGOV4SD) -Foundations. This report is one of the deliverables of the "Electronic Governance for Sustainable Development - Foundations" project executed by UNU-IIST Center for Electronic Governance in the UNU e-Macao Program portfolio for 2011.The document is structured into six sections as follows. Section 1 presents a motivating example of the unsustainable culture of a vanished community in the Easter Island. Section 2 introduces a framework to analyze practical experiences of SD initiatives undertaken by governments around the world. Section 3 explains in details 12 selected initiatives from various countries - Australia, Brazil, Hong Kong SAR, India, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Singapore, Switzerland, and UK, as well as from one partnership of African countries. The initiatives, selected as case studies, provide data and experiences to describe the state-of-practice in EGOV4SD. Section 4 analyzes the state-of-practice in EGOV4SD; while Section 5 explains the findings of the research work, and Section 6 draws some conclusions. Finally, five appendices present: 1) the documented and selected cases - Appendix A; 2) the EGOV-related and 3) SD-related problems addressed by the selected cases Appendices B and C, respectively; and 4) the type of contribution - Appendix D and 5) practical contribution - Appendix E; of the selected cases.
