In this paper we propose to quantify the use of science fiction movies in academic papers and analyze the patterns of use of those films indexed in international databases, using the ISI Web of Science database. Twenty films were selected from recognized sources. Films referenced in the scientific literature were detected and, with quantitative methodologies, we studied the documental types in which they belong, the journals of publication and the adscription disciplines. To analyze the ?patterns of use? we performed a detailed study of each paper where selected films were found, to observe and categorize the specific ways they are used in.
