Resumen:
Proterochampsids are semi-aquatic archosauriforms, endemic
to South America, with records from the middle Triassic Chañares Formation, the
upper Triassic Ischigualasto Formation, both in Argentina, and the middle/upper
Triassic Santa Maria Formation in southern Brazil. Three records of this group
are known from Brazil, two of them (Proterochampsa and Chanaresuchus) are
represented by skulls, and the third (Cerritosaurus), by a skull and postcranial
elements. A new record for Brazilian proterochampsids, represented by a partial
skull with the lower jaw, is described here. The inferior temporal fenestra shows
the postero-inferior notch typical of proterochampsids. Features observed in
the new specimen (e.g. superior temporal fenestra posteriorly divergent and
triangle-shaped) identify it as Chanaresuchus bonapartei. Reappraisal of a
specimen of the Brazilian Triassic previously considered as Chanaresuchus sp.,
indicate that, as it was recently suggested, the material is certainly part of
the clade comprising Chanaresuchus/Gualosuchus, but its poor preservation
prevents a better taxonomic precision.
