This book contains papers presented at the first Conference of Simulating the Past for Understanding the Present held at the Autonomous University of Barcelona in September of 2014. Chapters in this book present different approaches about social dynamics computer simulation and emergent phenomena through time. The purpose is to analyse in depth how from an historical perspective it is possible to define human interactions and environmental interactions processes Therefore the aim of this introductory chapter is present a complete and exhaustive overview of these research efforts in the domain of historical simulations and evaluate in with stage of social simulation we are in the present.
