Resumen:
Modiolastrum australe Krapov., an endemic species of the south of Buenos Aires Province, Argentina, has been proposed as a plant suitable for lawns. Its only known disease, a leaf spot, is described and shown to be caused by Cercospora gossypina Cooke.Through artificial Inoculation, this fungus was found to infect not only M. australe but five other species within the Malvaceae. The disease was transmitted to seedlings of M. australe via plant debris. Seeds of thisspecies were found to be free from C. gossypina; however, a high percentage of them was infested with the antagonistic fungus Gliocladium roseum Bain. (Hyphomycetes). C. gossypina has been found in all thepopulations of M. australe studied so far, and might affect the competitive and reproductive ability of this endemic species, although no imminent threat to its survival seems to exist. Care should be taken to avoid undue dissemination of the fungus if M. australe were used as a lawn species.
