Resumen:
Osteoporosis is suspected as a potential risk factor in periodontal disease. However, the detailed relationship between these diseases is unclear. The aim of the present work was to perform a histomorphometric evaluation of periodontitis associated bone loss in osteopenic rats. Twenty four female Wistar rats were divided into two groups: Sham group and ovariectomized group (OVX). Three months and a half post OVX/Sham, when osteopenia is well established, experimental periodontitis (EP) was induced in both groups by placing a cotton thread ligature around the neck of the first left lower molar for 96 hs; the contralateral molars served as untreated controls (C). The animals were sacrificed 96 hours later. The jaws were resected and histologically processed in order to obtain mesio-distally oriented sections. Bone loss was studied by evaluating interradicular bone volume (BV/TV)(%) and the height of periodontal ligament (PL) (um) at the level of the furcation
