Resumen:
Osteopenia is a long-term complication of diabetes found to occur in both humans and experimental animals, and is detected in long bones.  There are different mechanisms by which insulin deficiency affects mineralization.   It is widely accepted that these alterations in bone metabolism are caused by the anabolic effects of insulin, reduced osteoblast recruitment and/or local diminution in IGE-1,  which stimulates replication and normal functioning of osteoblasts.  On the other hand, lithium carbonate is frecuently used in bipolar disorders and has not been studied bone remodeling in diabetes associated with lithium carbonate intake.  Thus, the aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of the lithium carbonate intake in diabetic Wistar rats.  Twenty four female Wistar rats weighing 200 gr were used.  Diabetes was induced by intraperitoneal administration of a single does of 60 mg/kg b.w. of streptozotocin.  From day 6 of experiment  the experimental group received lithium carbonate intake (100/mg/kg/day) until day 30.  After sacrifice (day 30) tibiae were resected, and processed to embedding in paraffin.   Longitudinally tibiae sections were performed and stained with hematoxylin and eosin to study bone histomorphometric parameters, and histochemistry of tartrate resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) was determinated. The results obtain showed that in diabetic animals with lithium carbonate intake decrease the trabecular bone, associated with decrease of osteoblastic and osteoclastic activity  compared to controls and diabetic animals.   This experimental model show that lithium carbonate is an additive factor on the bone pathology that diabetes per se induce.  UBACYT O013
