Resumen:
The aim of this presentation is to introduce the first results obtained on the current ongoing tasks on the Anthropology Division of Museo de La Plata, La Plata National University, República Argentina. Those activities are framed on the Proyect "Catalog Actualization and Documentation of Human Skeletal Remains Collections of Anthropology Division", which began in 2007 and continues until today. Coleccions belonging to this Division have a long history that goes back to the founding moments of the museum since the late nineteenth century. Then, they werw enriched throgh Twentieth Century and continue to grow today, as an important element of cultural inheritance. For several years, bones were stored and had been transiting among reserve areas. Then, for the purposes of the present project, there was taken into account a set of premises related to the nature of the collections and its potential use for scientific tasks. Particulary, the scientific interest of the collections has raised the need for developing strategies for an optimal management, without jeopardizing the integrity of the collectios. This paper summarizez the work being done on the collection units, exemplified with the skulls. We present the results obtained on the different treatments for their documentation, management and conservation, as well as the role played by the collectios within the preventive conservation framework in the generation of scientific knowledge.
