Resumen:
Despite Argentina passing the gay marriage law in 2010, LGBTIQ+ people continue to face juridical obstacles to becoming parents. The Argentinean Diverse Families association (FAD as its Spanish acronym) was created to fight for their rights. FAD has three main goals: to promote modification of legislation to facilitate LGBTQ+ parenting, develop a supportive network to accompany families in the same situation across the country, and to make these families visible. This study describes and analyses the politics of visibility developed by this association through the creation of an Instagram multi-family’s album. FAD’s Instagram profile is full of pictures of different families, with gay, lesbian, trans, and non-binary parents and their children. Besides, FAD periodically posts stories on the same content and includes Instagram Lives of a program “aired” in 2021 and 2022. By creating this interactive multi-family’s album, FAD seeks to work towards its goal of visibility. However, the politics of visibility involves not only posting photos of FAD families, but also reposting other LGBTIQ+ families, both from Argentina and abroad. In a broader sense, the politics of visibility are one of the tools of the protest repertoire that LGBTQ+ groups have been developing since Stonewall. I scrutinize three aspects of the politics of visibility FAD develops when creating this multi-family’s album. First, I describe the types of families this album portrays: age and social backgrounds, the number of parents and their gender and sexual orientation and how many children they have, among others. Second, I reconstruct the logic of reposting to identify the original users’ posts: FAD members, other LGBTIQ+ ordinary families, and famous parents with their children. Third, I examine the contents, comments and reactions of these publications to observe the interactions and reactions they evoke.
