Resumen:
Hippeastreae, has a major center of diversification in central Chile and western Andean Argentina and a second center in eastern Brazil and northeastern Argentina. In this opportunity, species belonging to Habranthus from Argentina were cytogenetically studied by conventional staining. We report for the species Habranthus gracilifolius 2n=4x=24, (10m+14sm), H. brachyandrus 2n=4x=24, (16m+8sm), H. tubisphathus 2n=4x=24, (4m+20sm) and 2n=36 (16m+20sm), all based on x=6; H. barrosianus, 2n=2x=18, (14m+4sm) based on x=9 and H. pedunculosus2n=2x=14 (2m+6sm+6st) with x=7. We also report for the first time the chromosome data for H. coeruleus 2n=30, (21m+8sm+1st) and H. chacoensis (2n =12, 6m+4sm+2st). Meiotic chromosome behaviour in Habranthus was previously unknown. In this work H. chacoensis chromosomes segregates regularly and associated as 6 II at diakinesis and metaphase I in allanalyzed pollen mother cells (PMCs) and also in H. brachyandrus chromosomes behave regularly at meiosis, with 12 II at metaphase I. Sometimes in anaphase I, chromosomes bridges and few laggards were observed in studied pollen mother cells (PMCs) of this tetraploid species. The basic chromosome number x=6 is the more frequent in the genus, with diploid, polyploid and multiploid species.
