Negociando la obediencia explores the management of the American vice royalties while the royal favourite the Count-Duke of Olivares held power, in the context of the Hispanic Monarchy, understood as a system of multiple interrelationships. This work seeks to break the historiographic silence on the role of the transatlantic possessions for powerful royal favourites in the first half of the 17th century by showing how the policies of the Indies in the 1620s and 1630s represented an important element in the royal favourite´s agenda, and at the same time, influenced and was influenced by events in the Hispanic world. In fact, the American facet of Olivares´ government was of great importance, to the extent that it sought to make Peru and New Spain operate in a coordinated and dependent way as a support to the dynastic policy in response to the crisis in Castile, despite their growing defensive needs, loss of control over the administration, fiscal difficulties, and the strengthening of their powerful groups. In this context, from Madrid special emphasis was given to ensuring that compliance with royal commands and to impose active obedience. This did not prevent negotiation and agreement constituting the basis of the relationships between central power, government and the elites in the Indies.
