The main research problem addressed by thestudy is how and why software and information services (SIS) firms withdifferent business models configurations seek to integrate, reconfigure andenlarge the base of strategic resources and capabilities. A multiple case-studyresearch design, examining four SIS firms operating in Argentina, was adopted.The findings of the study allowed the identification of some patterns ofcapability development in SIS firms. It was found that, both in firms offeringstandardised products and customised solutions, R&D activities play acrucial role in sensing and seizing capabilities as they provide tools tointerpret the demands of customers and the opportunities offered by the marketand translate them into value-proposition. Whereas in the case of standardisedproducts, R&D activities are particularly focused on product development,in the case of customised solutions providers, it is a priority the developmentof component-based architectures and achieving an increasing efficiency indevelopment processes. The degree of openness of R&D activities beyond theboundaries of the firm is higher in firms with standardised value propositions,as it is less dependent on tacit knowledge. Finally, we found that firms withthis kind of value-propositions were more open to foreign venture capitals,since they lacked alternative sources of funding to develop their products
