Resumen:
In the history of urban growth and metropolitan development can be distinguished a large period called sub-urbanism; although his concept has a complex definition Keil?s proposal explain t in a simple way: ?Suburbanism as the combination of an increase in non-central city population and economic activity, as well as urban spatial expansion. Suburbanism(s) refers to a suburban way of life? (Keil, 2013: 9) A second period is overcoming of the process defined above and it is known as post-suburbanism. Referring to this period and it characterization this paper take as starting point the hypothesis Sieverts proposes: ?We might now speak about living in an era of post-suburbanism where the suburbs as the newly built subdivisions at the city´s edges are fading into memory and give way to more complex, variably scaled, functionally differentiated, and socioeconomically mixed metropolitan structures that contain rather than constrain natures? (Sieverts in Keil, 2013: 8).1 This assumption of post-suburbanism refutes the idea of the existence of homogeneous models of urban developments. In contrast there are processes which overlap through several years and/or ways. In view of the need to face the future urban development this is currently becoming a very important issue, probably turning into a central question in Latin America, the most urbanized region in the world. In Argentina, the discussion about Postsuburbia becomes necessary after observing that in the last decades the major mart of the urban growth in medium-size and metropolitan cities happened in their peripheries, of course partly associated with economic and cultural transformations boosted by globalization. In this context, the aim of the next pages is to show the different realities that are experiencing some metropolitan areas in Argentina, based on the compilation of comparatively presented case studies on three different cities. Due to the extension of this paper and with the objective of address this topic in a concise form/way, there was a need of cutting back information, which implies that many urban changes related with suburbanization or even post-suburbanism processes were left aside. Although Buenos Aires, Córdoba and San Juan share some things in common, such as the fact of having been founded during the Spanish colonial period, of being all of them provincial-state capitals, and of having a similar cultural basis; they differ in many other aspects, as their specific geographic situation and economic basis. Those differences gave as a result different urban and metropolitan developments. In order to clarify the way these similarities and diverge, the research began with an introduction to the country and a historical approach to urban development in Argentina. Later on, each case of study -Buenos Aires, Córdoba and San Juan- is characterized according to the follow-ing aspects: Growth, Networks, Clusters and Use, Urban Design, Open Space and Social Space. Furthermore, in order to make a more detailed characterization of the described processes in each city, the analysis of recent urban growth trends have been addressed through paradigmatic cases in each city. In this regard, in the case of Buenos Aires is made a critic approach linked to the suburbanization and post suburbanization process. In Cordoba are presented four examples to show the diversity of new residential patterns in suburban territory. Finally, in San Juan are described the logics of occupation inside the metropolitan territory. Finally some inference is reached in consideration with the problematic.
