Bacillus subtilis PhoD is an extracytoplasmic phosphodi- esterase that catalyzes the hydrolysis of phosphodiester bonds. It also possesses phosphomonoesterase activity. In vitro it hydrolyses compounds containing phosphoester bonds but it does not cleave phosphorus?nitrogen or phosphorus?carbon bonds. It has been postulated that in vivo it releases phosphate from the cell wall teichoic acid.
