Resumen:
Feeding is considered a major challenge for fish, and owing to its magnitude it has been proposed as a mechanism of cellular death and ageing. We used adult rainbow trout (15 °C) voluntarily feeding on 3 % per week (single ration), to quantify ROS production (LPO, PO, and red blood cells (RBC) DNA-damage) and antioxidant defenses (SOD, CAT, GPx and GST), before and after feeding (whole digestion) in gills, stomach, intestine and liver. Tissue specific differences were found in the antioxidant defenses, with liver and intestine showing the highest and gills showing the lowest. RBC DNA damage was lowest between 48 to 96 h post feeding, increasing between 24 h pre and 24 post-feeding. However, no major changes in the ROS production or in the antioxidant defences during a feeding cycle were found, not providing strong evidence for the proposed mechanism by which feeding would have a major influence on longevity via the induction of oxidative stress.
