Resumen:
Staphylococcus aureus is a major human pathogen that causes infections characterized by an intense inflammatory response. Protein A (SpA), is a critical virulence factor that mimics TNF-ALPHA signaling cascades by interacting with TNFR1 and initiates a strong inflammatory response that leads to the recruitment of neutrophils to the site of infection. The aim of this study was to determine the role of SpA in the induction of pro-inflammatory responses in human neutrophils and its capability to modulate cell survival. Neutrophils were stimulated with purified SpA, GST (as control), S. aureus or an isogenic mutant that lacks SpA expression (spa-) for different periods of time and cytokines and chemokines were quantified by ELISA or Real Time PCR.
