Resumen:
This presentation focuses on one “morality campaign” that the Federal Police, along with a wide array of “civilian” organizations, enforced and promoted in Buenos Aires from October of 1960 to May of 1961. Consisting of raids in bars, coffee stores, plazas, and pubs as well as of confiscations of so-called “pornographic” printed materials, the campaign targeted fundamentally young women and men as alleged targets of the tandem of liberalism and Communism.  This paper argues that, in early 1960s Buenos Aires, beneath the fervor to defend youth from “immorality” and therefore to regulate its sexuality, lay anxieties about the effects of modernization and fears about the penetration of Communism into the youthful minds and bodies, especially reinforced after the Cuban Revolution.
