Resumen:
This study explores the use of rice husk ash (RHA), a by-product of rice milling, as a sustainable additive for ceramic brick production. RHA from Argentina Chaco region was analyzed through ATD/TG and XRD, revealing a decrease in the amorphous phase and increased crystalline phases (quartz, albite) with higher RHA content. This was accompanied by increased porosity, while theoretical density remained stable, reflecting a balance between crystallization and porosity development. Mechanical tests showed reduced elastic modulus and flexural strength due to porosity, with the Differential Effective Medium (DEM) model providing the best elastic modulus predictions. Despite reduced mechanical properties, bricks with up to 15% RHA maintained suitability for non-structural applications, demonstrating an environmentally sustainable alternative to conventional bricks. This research addresses local waste management challenges, showcasing a circular economy approach by transforming agricultural by-products into valuable construction materials.
