Resumen:
In agroforestry systems, shade trees strongly affect the environment and the physiology of the main crop. We monitored canopy openness, air temperature, photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance (gs) of yerba mate plants under different shade trees. We found that canopy openness was reduced by 28-66% below crowns of shade trees, as well as maximum temperatures. The photosynthetic rate of yerba mate was quite stable. However, a reduction in gs was observed in thecultivation system with the lowest canopy openness. The presence of shade trees in yerba mate cultivation modifies environmental conditions and can impact the physiology of plants.
