Resumen:
Mexico has made significant progress in recovering its biodiversity information through the efforts of CONABIO (the National Commission for the Knowledge and Use of Biodiversty). CONABIO has collected 350,000 data records of birds from 40 scientific institutions worldwide. In our study we used part of these data to identify areas of endemism in Mexico. As a preliminary step, we used only the taxa restricted to Mexico (105 species with 6000 records). We applied a new, grid-based method (NDM,vers. 2.0; short citation) that uses optimality criteria to identify such areas. This method incorporates an explicit spatial component, äs it considers the taxa occurring in a given area and their position in the grid space. NDM recognizes groups of cells (= areas)with endemic species, weighting each candidate species according to the degree of adjustment of its distribution in relation to the area under evaluation. Results that were obtained using several sizes of cells are will also be discussed. NDM provides a powerful means for identifying areas of endemism quantitatively and should have broad applicability in systematics and conservation science.
