In the early twentieth century, these performers brought something new and highly profitable to the traditional circus-like attractions that characterized early varieté shows. They blended originality and imitation across a spectrum of performed racialized femininities that acquired local tones and meanings at multiple nodes of an Atlantic theatrical circuit.
