Resumen:
Long-trained Nightjar Macropsalis forcipata is endemic to the Atlantic Forest of Brazil and the province of Misiones in north-east Argentina, and has been considered to be possibly globally threatened. Extensive work by naturalists in Misiones failed to produce any records until 1973, suggesting that it was absent or very rare there in the early half of the 20th century. In contrast, between 2003 and 2010, we have found Long-trained Nightjar to be frequent or common in the eastern half of the province, whilst recent records from the north, west and south suggest that the species is expanding its range in the country. Nearly all of our hundreds of records of Long-trained Nightjar are from patchwork landscapes, young secondary growth and very degraded areas, albeit often near forest. We suggest that conversion of primary forest to degraded areas has permitted the species to colonise Argentina in the last 50 years and that records in Paraguay should be expected soon.
