Several university text-books were analyzed from 1920 to the present. We reviewed the growth and changes on the particular case of benzene and aromaticity concept. In addition, the relationship between the verbal and graphical information, and the use of analogies for understanding the chemical formulas were included. This overview may increase our knowledge about the way than representations of benzene and the aromaticity concept have played on organic chemistry development. Furthermore, this study enhances the pedagogical content knowledge in view of the fact that it may help us to rethink about how we teach chemical concepts and how students may understand them.
