Resumen:
Salmonella enterica is an invasive pathogen that causes enterocolitis in men, cattle and poultry. Here, we used a murine model of salmonellosis to analyze the effect of L. casei consumption during the development of infection. We found that the uptake of probiotic for one week prior to infection significantly reduces invasiveness and persistence of the pathogen in spleen and Peyer´s patches. L. casei prevented the increase of intestinal permeability and the histological changes that occur during enterocolitis. Moreover, cecum and mesenteric lymph node augmented expression of TNF-α, IL-17, IL-23, IL-1β and IL-6 that occurs during Salmonella infection was drastically inhibited in animals fed with the probiotic. These results suggest that L. casei would enhance intestinal barrier health through modulation of cytokine expression involved in immune cell differentiation such as Th17 lymphocytes and γδ cells.
