Resumen:
The study of the growth characteristics of trees and its utility as environmental biomonitors of urban environments is considered in this contribution. Through the published information of the tree growth characteristics in urban conditions, we show a general focus of the importance of trees in the cities, the impacts received by the various particular growth conditions and the responses of trees to different environmental changes. These conditions influences tree growth being recorded in different parts of trees, including wood. For this reason, trees can be considered as bio-indicators of environmental variations, such as produced by pollution or the basic resources for growth. The dendrochronological analysis on Platanus hispanica growing on the city of Mendoza shows that the tree-growth is function of both the water supply as well as various influences due to forest management. This raises the need to develop more efficient management plans of urban trees and the selection of tree species of greater tolerance to environmental factors considered critical to growth. Consequently, more knowledge on these topics are important to ensure the urban tree's permanence time and preserving the urban ecosystem´s quality.
