Resumen:
During the last years an important development of pines plantation have been occurred in the Norwest portion of Corrientes Province, Argentina. The main destination of the activity is the sawn goods so the timber thinning is required, primarily undertaken to improve the growth rate and quality of the remaining trees. Actually, Growth Models are a convenient tool for forest management, and these models need the input of biophysical parameters estimation. The satellite remote sensing data are being used to derive input to these models. The goal of this work is to evaluate the aptitude of Vegetation Index (NDVI: Normalized Difference Vegetation Index and SR: Simple Ratio) to estimate biophysical parameters of the vegetation in Pinus taeda stands. The study cases were forest stands with the same forest management history; some of them were systematical thinning during 2006. Landsat images acquired on 2004, 2005 and 2007, prior and post thinning were analyzed. The NDVI and SR calculated from reflectance were analyzed at two levels: pixel and stand level, using the mean value. By analysis of variance (ANOVA) significant differences were found for both indices. An association between age plantation and indices were found and a decrease in the values in thinning stands.
