Resumen:
The brown algal genus Colpomenia is a common flora of tropical to warm temperate coasts. In the Atlantic Patagonian coast of Argentina, C. sinuosa is the only representative reported of this genus; however, recent surveys suggested the occurrence of two morphotypes. Like many genera in the Scytosiphonaceae, Colpomenia has a long and problematic taxonomic history which is reflected in the extensive paraphyly in both single and multigene based phylogenies. Herein, we assessed the identity of Colpomenia from Chubut and Río Negro (Argentina), based on morphological and molecular data. Results of the phylogenetic analyses based on cox3 and psaA genes suggested the presence of two species: Colpomenia claytoniae and Colpomenia peregrina. Morpho-anatomical observations of thecorresponding specimens confirmed their similarities with previous accounts of both species elsewhere. This report thus adds both C. claytoniae and C. peregrina to the marine algal flora of Argentina. Interestingly, we were not able to recover representatives of the widely distributed generitype C. sinuosa. Moreover, based on the observed paraphyly in Colpomenia and other genera in the family, we believe that taxonomic revisions among several taxa in the Scytosiphonaceae are in order.
