Resumen:
This study evaluated the seed productionand quality and the subsequent regeneration establishmentin five pure Nothofagus antarctica forestsgrowing at different site qualities and crown coverduring 10 years, in Southern Patagonia (Argentina).Four traps of 1 m2 were installed in each stand andsampled monthly (between February and May) eachyear. The incorporation and survival of seedlings wereevaluated using four permanent plots of 1 m2 in eachstand. The site quality of the studied forests did notinfluence seed production and regeneration. Theamount of seed production and seed quality wereproved to have a decisive influence on the N.antarctica seedling establishment in the subsequentyears. At the same time, our results suggest thatindependently of the site class, the canopy opennessfor silvopastoral use improved the conditions forseedling establishment. However, the success ofseedling survival over time would be conditioned forthe influence of other factors such as understorycompetition.
