Resumen:
Silvopastoral systems in Nothofagusantarctica (n?ire) forest have become an economical, ecological and productive alternative in Patagonia.Southern Patagonia?s experience over the past12 years with silvopastoral systems is reviewed. Theproductivity and nutritive value (crude protein contentand dry matter digestibility) of the understoreygrassland were dependent on the interaction of environmental(mainly soil water availability and lightintensity) and management factors under the trees andin turn determined animal performance. A methoddeveloped for carrying capacity estimation at thepaddock level was based on the potential abovegroundnet primary production, and values ranged from 85 to2200 kg DM ha-1 year-1. Planned thinning in secondaryforest stands provides wood production andalso improves the undestorey DM production byincreasing incoming radiation. Within a managementplan, a stand?s water stress conditions as well as theuse of Reineke?s stand density index are proposed toassist in determining thinning intensities. Livestockproduction is the main annual income of silvopastoralsystems where cattle and mixed livestock production(cattle ? sheep) is the main activity. Animal performanceat the whole farm scale is presented bycomparing traditional extensive grazing managementwith an adaptive silvopastoral management thatincluded strategic separation in homogeneous areas(grass steppe, forest and riparian meadows), stockingrate adjustment to grassland net primary productionand the protection of regeneration from herbivoresbrowsing. Data from litter decomposition, nutrientcycling and carbon storage studies also are presented. Finally, aspects related to the criteria and indicators toassess n?ire forest?s sustainability under silvopastoraluse along with biodiversity conservation issues arepresented.
