Resumen:
The University City of Buenos Aires (CU) is an emblematic case of the isolation and accessibility problems found in most Latin American ?university cities?. What was originally thought of as a virtuous aspect ?their high degree of autonomy that would protect them from the outside world? is currently one of the biggest challenges in adapting them to the goals of contemporary urbanism, especially with regards to promoting sustainable mobility. The aim of this article is to assess the socio-environmental benefits that would come with the shift to more sustainable mobility on trips to/from CU, with special emphasis on non-motorized modes. To do this, we conducted an on-line survey that informed us about the main infrastructure and service deficits, as well as a measure of their environmental impacts. We then applied research-by-design methods to create scenarios that would promote more sustainable forms of mobility and estimated the resulting environmental savings.
