Nonlinear parameter identification of mooring lines in dynamic operation

In this paper an adaptive algorithm for estimation of physical parameters of cables in viscous environment on the basis of on-board instrumentation data is presented. The procedure is useful for obtaining cable characteristics which are needed in stability analysis and control system design for moored floating structures. The algorithm is also able to estimate changes in the depth on-line. It is based on a nonlinear resolutor which can cope with parametric nonlinearities that are present in the model structure of the static configuration. Additionally it tests for consistency of parameters in order to confer the estimation a robustness with respect to errors in the data. The influences of the drag forces and hydrodynamic high-frequency effects in the estimation are tested by simulations.
